White-margined Nightshade
Solanum marginatum
A shrubby perennial plant in the nightshade family, also known as purple African nightshade, with distinctive white-margined leaves and purple flowers.
White-margined nightshade (Thola), scientifically known as Solanum marginatum, is a perennial shrub native to East Africa and found throughout Southern Africa. It grows 1-2 meters tall with distinctive silvery-white margined leaves and striking purple flowers. The plant produces small round berries that change from green to yellow-orange when ripe. It is commonly found in disturbed areas, along roadsides, and in cultivated lands. Like other members of the nightshade family, this plant contains solanine alkaloids and should be handled with caution.
CAUTION: This plant contains solanine alkaloids. While traditionally used in African medicine, all parts should be handled with care. Berries can be toxic if consumed in large quantities. Traditional medicinal use should only be undertaken under guidance of knowledgeable practitioners. Keep away from children and livestock.
