Makobane
Effective date: 19 September 2025
Makobane exists to protect and amplify Sesotho by creating a living, community-centred digital dictionary and language platform. We build tools and learning materials that make the language discoverable, teachable, and usable in everyday life and in technology — while ensuring contributor rights, responsible data practices, and equitable benefit to the communities who keep the language alive.
We imagine a future where Sesotho is visible and valued across schools, media, software, and public life — where speakers find their words honored online and where language resources are co-owned, culturally grounded, and sustainably stewarded by the communities that speak them.
Despite deep cultural value, many local languages are under-digitized, scattered across inaccessible sources, or harvested without consent. This creates risks:
This section maps core Makobane activities to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and suggests measurable actions we track.
